We learned more details from my fetal medicine consultant about the loss of Leo and any implications all the events would have on my future pregnancies. The sudden loss of Leo that day was due to a placental abruption starting i.e detaching itself from where it was embedded. The placenta was chronically not doing its job of providing for Leo, as goes with pre-eclampsia, and hence he was small size for dates. We learned he was put together normally i.e there were no genetic abnormalities; so happily he was a normal little boy who sadly had to ensure his mummy's awful illness through the placenta malfunctioning. I learned that I have no blood disorders which may have been involved, and so next time would need to just start taking aspirin daily to try to prevent pre-eclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction of the baby; I know I'll have a 50% chance of developing pre-eclampsia again due to the severity in which I had it this time, but I'll be closely monitrored from the beginning and it could also be I don't develop it at all. We were reassured that Leo did not suffer and was not in distress at any time, as I specifically asked about this. In an ideal world before I become pregnant again my kidneys should completely resolve, and I should no longer have the protein in my urine; however if things seem to be taking too long and doesn't clear in the next few months, during which we may decide we want to actively try again, I'll most likely have to have a renal biopsy to check there's no background condition, which will in turn affect the management of my next pregnancy. I have an appointment with my nephrologist again at the end of this month. So we try to remain positive, and pray for the best. Hopefully Leo, you know all this, and will help us too; and please know that you will always be my first baby and never ever forgotten- one day I'll be telling your brother/ sister all about you their big brother and what a special baby he was!
